Party size

How many of you are there?

Count the people who are actually travelling, including the children. The awkward answer is in the middle of this ladder, where the party is too big for a car and too small to fill a van, and that is where most wrong bookings are made.

Party size against class

The seat count is what the permit allows and it includes nobody standing. A driver will refuse an extra passenger at the gate, and that is his licence rather than him being difficult.

  1. 4

    Hatchback

Right when it is one or two people and the day is a short one: a drop at T3 before an early flight, a morning of running about Gurugram and south Delhi, somebody met off the train and taken home. It stops being right with the car full and a long way to go, because this is a smaller cabin and a firmer ride than the class above, and on a long run everybody in the back feels both.

  2. 4

    Sedan

The party sits across the back without anybody perched. That covers the run to the terminal, a day out to Delhi or Chandigarh and back, and the car an office sends for a visitor it is meeting off a train.

    Compact MPV

Right when everybody is going to the same place for the same days, and the party is a family rather than five grown adults. It works with the last row up when what is going back there is children, as far as Karnal or Kurukshetra. When adults have to sit there as far as Haridwar, that is a bigger booking, and it is cheaper to know that now than to find it out in the driveway.

    Full-size MPV

Right when the middle row is genuinely full and the road is going to climb. Chandigarh and back in a day is something almost anything on the card will do well. Shimla with the family and a hotel booked at the top is a day where the engine is still being asked to pull two hours after the plains have finished, and that is the day this class is bought for.

    Tempo traveller

The party is past what two cars will hold, or it is not quite past it and you still want everybody in the same vehicle so the talking carries on and nobody spends the morning following somebody else’s headlights. A temple circuit the group has been planning since Diwali. An office going up to Rishikesh for two nights. A wedding shifting guests between the hotel and the venue all evening and again at midnight. Split that across cars and you are briefing a driver three times over, collecting three sets of toll receipts, and standing at the other end waiting for whichever one got stuck behind a truck on the bypass.

    Mini coach

When the party is too big for a tempo traveller but the address is not built for anything longer. It follows a car up a hill road, turns inside a school gate and gets down a temple lane with parking on both sides, which is the whole reason to take it over the coach.

    Coach

When the whole guest list has to arrive in one load and be met at one place. It needs a wide approach and open ground to swing round in, so the question we ask first is not the headcount but where it is expected to stand, and on a marriage garden with brick gate pillars that answer decides it.
